Style Guide        Templates
Adherence to COL style guide is essential for efficient review and publication of submissions. Additional information and template for MS Word & WordPerfect and LaTeX & REVTeX are also available. See the Authors tab for general information for authors.

Title Author names & Affiliations Abstract OCIS Codes
Equations References Figures&Tables Funding Sources
Article Length and Proof Publication Fees Copyright
1. Title
The title should be concise but informative. Avoid beginning with an article or a preposition. The words "new" or "novel" should be avoided in the title and the text for legal reasons. Titles may be edited by the publisher to facilitate computer search.
2. Author names and Affiliations
Author names should be given in full and consistent form to facilitate indexing. Affiliations and postal addresses for all authors should appear on the title page.
3. Abstract
The abstract should be no longer than 100 words. It should be informative, without descriptive words or citations, and contain the major conclusions and quantitative results or other significant items in the paper. Together with the title, the abstract must be adequate as an index to all the subjects treated in the paper, and will be used as a base for indexing.
4. OCIS Codes
OCIS codes should be provided to help with indexing. This set of codes was formulated by the Optical Society of America and well-known in the optical research world. OCIS codes are available on Chinese Optics Letters’ web page and the OSA publication web pages. Each manuscript must be given 2-4 OCIS codes below the abstract, and the principal index code should be placed first.
5. Equations
Equations should be punctuated and aligned to bring out their structure, and numbered consecutively in round brackets on the right-hand side of the page.
Notation. Notation must be legible, clear, compact, and consistent with standard usage. In general, acronyms should be defined at first use.
Variables and Vectors. Set single-letter variables in italics (Eg. M). Set vectors in boldface (Eg. m). Functions, derivative "d," abbreviations, and multi-letter identifiers should be set in roman (plain) type (Eg. α, cos, ∫...dx, kout).
Fences. For simple bracketing the usual order of parentheses and brackets is { [ ( { [ ( ) ] } ) ] }.
Bit and Byte. The standard abbreviations for bit and byte are b and B, respectively. To avoid confusion, these units should be spelled out in most cases (1 bit, 20 GBytes).
6. References
References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first referenced in the body of the paper. Two references [2,3] should be included together, separated by a comma, and three or more consecutive references should be indicated by the bounding numbers and an en dash [1-4].

When compiling your references, be sure to include the titles of articles. COL require this information before a paper can be sent to peer review. The reference titles will subsequently be removed by copy editors before they are published, so this information is not included in the length estimate sent to authors when a positive decision is made by the editor.

When reference authors are mentioned in the text, use surnames only (unless further clarity is needed), and use "et al." and first author name when three or more authors are given.

COL online journals allow export of references in BibTeX, RIS, RTF, and plain text formats. See the templates for BibTex and EndNote tools.

7. Figures and Tables
Figures
Figures should be original laser prints with high contrast (resolution above 600 dpi), suitable for immediate reproduction, typed on separate sheets and identified by its number. They will normally be reduced to one column width (6-8 cm). In the figures, the main lines should be about 0.3 mm in width, and the assistant lines 0.15 mm. Notations in the figures should be distinct and consistent with the same ones in the text, and their font size will be 7-9 pt. The positions of figures should be marked in the text by boxes of a suitable size. Each figure should have its own caption. Color Art is Online Only, and free to authors.
Tables
Tables must be numbered in order of appearance, should be appended on separate sheets and identified with appropriate titles. The table title, which should be brief, goes above the table. Note that tables are usually typeset, not scanned (tables cannot be electronically reduced in size).

8. Funding Sources
Please identify all appropriate funding sources by name and contract number in the Acknowledgment section.
9. Article Length and Proof
Note that Chinese Optics Letters has a limit of four printed pages. If a paper exceeds this limit, it must be shortened before the paper is accepted. If the page proof is over the four-page limit, the proof must be shortened before the paper can be assigned to a final issue. Authors should use the COL Word or LaTeX templates to prepare manuscripts to facilitate length checking.
Authors will receive page proofs of their papers. Corrected proofs should be returned to the COL Editorial office as soon as possible, to avoid publication delays.
10. Chinese Optics Letters Publication Fees
COL requires authors to pay a publication fee. Authors should pay the fee after their paper has been accepted for publication. Current fees in effect starting on January 1, 2009, is 500 RMB (100 USD) per page.
If you have questions or comments please e-mail: dingjie@siom.ac.cn
11. Copyright
As the manuscript has been accepted, all authors should transfer the copyright of the article, including that of the printing and on-line version, to the publisher. All authors must sign the Transfer of Copyright Agreement before the article can be published. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information.
Editors would inform the corresponding author to return the copyright transfer agreement before the chief- editor’s final examination

Manuscript Preparation Template
Some changes in the COL template have been made, and according to the new template.
1. For all authors, the innovation information of paper will not be required anymore ;
2. For Chinese authors, the information of paper in Chinese version, such as Title, Authors, Affiliation, Abstract, Keywords, are required to be submitted in a separate file. Please download the “Chinese information” file to ensure a right submission format. So, for them at least two files are submitted. [2011.5]

Tips for Reference Arrangement and Journal Name Abbreviation
• The authors are recommended to use reference manager tools to arrange the list of references before submission.
• Most journal names in the list of references should be abbreviated, and the authors can find the commonly-used journal name abbreviation from the website of https://authors.aps.org/STYLE/style_jabbr.html#S

If you have questions or comments please e-mail:hlw@siom.ac.cn.

Guidelines on Manuscript Length
Chinese Optics Letters articles are limited within four published journal pages.
• All estimates are made in terms of single-column Chinese Optics Letters lines (COL lines). Whenever a rule gives a line equivalent for a number of characters (letters, numerals, and spaces), it is to be understood that partial COL lines will be counted as full lines.

• Standard headings take 36 COL lines.

• If the title is longer than 66 characters, add 4 lines for every additional 66 characters.

• If more than 1 address is to be given, add 7 lines for each additional address

• If the abstract is longer than 700 characters (100 words), add 1 line for each additional 100 characters. Subtract 1 line for every 100 characters fewer than 700 characters.

• For the text of a manuscript, count the total number of manuscript lines (exclude equations). Count the number of characters in 3 representative manuscript lines (keeping in mind that each space counts as one character), and calculate the number of COL lines using the formula: number of COL lines = (total number of manuscript text lines) x (number of characters on 3 manuscript lines / 156).

• A simple equation occupies 3 COL lines for up to 50 characters, and 1 additional COL line for each additional 50 characters on the same equation line. A complex equation (involving sigma, ?, fractions, subscripts, or superscripts) will occupy 4 COL lines for each additional 50 characters.

• For each table, count the number of lines per table and add 2 lines; double this number if any line exceeds 56 characters.

• For each figure caption count 1 line for each 56 characters and add 2 lines.

• For each reference count 1 line for each 56 characters.

• For each figure that can be reduced to single-column width, calculate the height / width ratio. Add these ratios for all figures and multiply the result by 19.5 to get the equivalent number of COL lines. (A square single-column figure will occupy 19.5 COL lines.)

• Total manuscript length : If the estimate of the total number of COL lines is less than 480, there should be no problem with the manuscript length. If the manuscript office estimates the length to be between 480 and 530 lines, the manuscript will be sent to the referees but may need to be shortened - incurring additional delays - before publication. Manuscripts estimated to be longer than 530 lines will be returned to the authors for shortening without processing, and the shortened manuscript will be assigned a new receipt date.
